JULIO C. NOVOA, M.D.
Dr. Novoa was born in Lima, Peru. He graduated with honors from Meharry Medical School in 1995. He completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology through the Greater Baltimore Medical Center in Baltimore, MD in 1999.
He began his private practice in August 1999 and has one of the largest solo OB/GYN practices in the El Paso area. Dr. Novoa is one of only a handful of OBs in the El Paso area specializing and promoting the Trial of Labor after Cesarean Section (TOLAC) and successful vaginal delivery for patients with one (VBAC) and two previous Cesarean Sections (VBA2C).
Dr. Novoa has impressive success rate with both uncomplicated and high risk vaginal deliveries such as the VBAC. His delivery stats are available online with monthly primary C/S rates as low as 3-7%, which is 3x-7x lower than the national average.
Dr. Novoa's interests include management of teen and high risk pregnancies and he specializes in high risk deliveries such as Trial of Labor and Twin Vaginal Delivery.
He is a panel member of the Del Sol Teen Centers and Sierra Providence Teen Centers. He is also the Medical Director of the Novoa Women & Teen Center.
Despite delivering more than 3000 babies since starting his practice in 1999, and currently delivering around 150-200 babies per year, Dr. Novoa has one of the lowest Cesarean section rates in the United States which is currently lower than 7 percent for primary deliveries.*
He is also one of the few doctors in the El Paso area who encourages Trial of labor (TOL)/Vaginal Birth after Cesarean Section (VBAC) deliveries on single previous Cesarean section candidates.* His current rate of Cesarean section for this type of delivery is 10%.*
*The current rate of Cesarean Section in the US is above 30 percent. The World Health Organization (WHO),
and the US Department of Health and Human Services (Healthy People 2010) recommend a primary Cesarean section rate at or below 15 percent.
Each of these organizations also encourage offering TOL/VBAC to patients although fewer than 5 percent of Obstetricians offer this service.
Dr. Novoa is trained in minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery as well as in office and outpatient procedures for the diagnosis and management of urinary incontinence, abnormal vaginal bleeding and abnormal PaP smears.
He also specializes in pelvic reconstructive surgery for the treatment of vaginal and uterine prolapse and procidentia, as well as, cosmetic gynecology. Currently, he offers the unique surgery known as Virginal Size Restoration surgery.
Dr. Novoa's knowledge and experience related to obstetrics has directly influenced his gynecological training and his practice. He has performed hundreds of vaginal and vulvar modifications following vaginal deliver, which has placed him in an small group of reconstructive pelvic surgeons and cosmetic gynecologists.
